We're Here: Teen Skills Group
Adolescence can feel like a very isolating time, trauma following an assault can compound this sense of isolation. To address the needs of female-identified adolescent survivors (ages 13 – 18) in the beginning stages of their healing process, in 2019, The Blue Bench held its first teen skills group.
Caroline, a therapist at The Blue Bench who was instrumental in starting the group, explained, “My co-facilitator and I created space for group members to differentiate their PTSD symptoms and ‘typical’ adolescent emotions. We also focused on normalizing these symptoms and helping members build coping skills.”
The group worked through modules consisting of age-appropriate curricula. These modules included establishing safety, understanding PTSD, grounding exercises, self-care and compassion, and setting and maintaining boundaries. “Our ultimate goal was to help group members establish a sense of empowerment and connection with each other to continue moving forward in their healing processes,” said Caroline.
