President Trump’s recent executive order declared that the federal government would no longer recognize transgender identities, signaling hostility toward and an erasure of nearly 3 million Americans. By invalidating their identities, this order creates an environment where transgender, nonbinary, genderfluid, and genderqueer individuals are more likely to experience violence.
Almost half of all transgender people have been sexually assaulted at some point in their lives, and these rates are even higher for trans people who have also experienced other forms of marginalization or violence/oppression (NSVRC, 2019).
LGBTQIA+ individuals will now face additional obstacles when searching for medical care, navigating the criminal legal system, and utilizing community resources.
Marginalization and the trauma that occurs because of discrimination are life-threatening.
At The Blue Bench, we are committed to protecting marginalized identities and creating spaces where everyone, no matter their gender identity, feels safe and supported.
We want to make it clear: We stand with our gender-diverse friends, family, colleagues, neighbors, business owners, teachers, and community members.
We promise to continue to center the voices and needs of transgender survivors and provide a space where they can find the support and care they need to heal. Every survivor of sexual violence deserves to feel seen, heard, and valued, and we will work tirelessly to ensure that their voices are not erased.

La reciente orden ejecutiva del presidente Trump declaró que el gobierno federal ya no reconocería las identidades transgénero, demostrando hostilidad y contribuyendo a la invisibilización de cerca de 3 millones de personas. Al invalidar estas identidades, esta orden crea un entorno en el que las personas transgénero, no binarias, de género fluido y género queer tienen más probabilidades de experimentar violencia.
