Part of the Solution: Preventing Sexual Violence and Supporting Survivors
Part of the Solution: Preventing Sexual Violence and Supporting Survivors is provided to all new arrivals at Denver Women’s Correctional Facility. Led by The Blue Bench’s Community Educators and co-facilitated with Peer Educators -- women currently incarcerated at DWCF who are part of the Peer Educator program – participants learn about their rights and protections under the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA).
The workshop was designed to address the fact that sexual violence happens both within and outside of incarceration settings, and everyone can contribute to a culture in which sexually violent behaviors are recognized, perpetrators are stopped and survivors are supported.
It provides an opportunity for participants to learn about dynamics of sexual violence, consent, force and coercion, and ways those dynamics can be uniquely impacted by the incarceration setting.
Participants also increase knowledge about impacts of trauma, strategies for self-care while incarcerated, how to help a friend who has been affected, resources available through The Blue Bench and Department of Corrections and reporting options.
