Uniting in Action: Creating a Culture to Prevent Sexual Violence

Uniting in Action: Creating a Culture to Prevent Sexual Violence

Developed in collaboration with high school students, educators, and practitioners, Uniting in Action: Creating a Culture to Prevent Sexual Violence builds on the knowledge of participants to empower them in their role in shaping community responses to sexual violence. In focusing on the role of bystanders, workshop participants build knowledge to recognize sexually inappropriate and violent behaviors, develop empathy for survivors, and hone skills to support prosocial bystander intervention.

Participants will leave the workshop empowered with the knowledge, confidence, and skills necessary to play a role in preventing sexual violence.

Through this evidence-informed curriculum, participants will:

  • Understand the definition of bystander intervention and its application to sexual violence
  • Develop an understanding of a range of sexually inappropriate and violent behaviors
  • Be able to define consent and application to bystander role
  • Recognize elements of healthy and unhealthy relationships
  • Analyze how culture and media messages play a role in sexual violence
  • Recognize their role in shifting cultural norms to support survivors and prevent sexual violence
  • Develop empathy for survivors of sexual violence
  • Understand the impacts of sexual assault on a survivor and be able to identify ways to support a friend/loved one
  • Apply bystander intervention concepts to a variety of scenarios utilizing workshop concepts, personal strengths and skills to support intervention
  • Increase willingness and commitment to engage in bystander behaviors to prevent sexual violence, help in a risky situation, and support survivors
  • Develop confidence in ability to intervene around sexual violence
  • Be able to identify local resources available to both survivors of sexual violence and those who support survivors
